I own both the DVD and the Blu-ray version, and I'm extremely disappointed by the Blu-ray version for 2 reasons: 1 It does not include the original introduction by Raymond Briggs.

I love hearing him recite: "I remember that winter because it had brought the heaviest snow I had ever seen. Snow had fallen steadily all night long and in the morning I woke in a room filled with light and silence, the whole world seemed to be held in a dream-like stillness.

It was a magical day Once you notice that the tops and bottoms of scenes are missing, you can't un-see it. You can't help but notice when heads cut out of scenes, and other details are missing.

I only watch the DVD version because I want to see the entirety of every scene as it was originally created and framed.

I highly recommend getting the DVD version instead. It doesn't fill the entire width of your HDTV, but it's not supposed to.

Enjoy the movie in the original format, with bars along the side and every other perfect imperfection. Just discovered this in , this little film fantasy from So lucky me not to miss it entirely.

It's quite lovely how the style of the drawings of the book were carried over into the film. By being not so "realistic" it sets the imagination freer.

And that the music so intertwined with the moving images made the experience so much "walking in the air". Some here expressed sadness at the ending, but even dreams end.

And music, after the beginning, it is in movement until finally reaching the end. It is the fleeting of the moment that bids you to be fully in it while in motion.

My stepson had told me about this movie back in the 90s, and said his mom had it on a VHS tape. Somehow, I got hold of a copy of the book and also the DVD.

Have loved it ever since. It is a story very well 1 told, 2 drawn, and 3 animated. As for the thing about the missing David Bowie intro see other reviews , if you must see it, go to YouTube.

But as much as I looked forward to seeing that intro, the original intro fits way better for this piece. And as cool as is David Bowie, the author's intro works much better, as might be expected.

But it is bittersweet, so sometimes I stick it out for the "sweet" part. If it's possible you've been living under a rock and you aren't familiar with The Snowman, get this!

It's a magical story without words, and the music is beautiful. Your kids will love it, and you will stand in the doorway watching it, too, because it's amazing.

Ok, it's also a little sad, because, spoiler alert, the snowman melts, but hey, life isn't perfect, and all magical moments must come to an end.

But kids tend to be mesmerized by this, and it really gets their imaginations going. The music and animation are lovely. Don't miss this classic.

Love this sweet movie - the book is equally enchanting! Our kids have all watched this at various stages - even though older now, they love watching it with little children and relive the wonder all over again!

My daughter even bought the music Walking In The Air. We consider this a classic. He recently learned how to put the mouthpiece on his papa's French horn and can hold a key and blow through the 26 feet of tubing, making a wonderful sound.

I was on Skype with him while he was watching The Snowman, and he could pick out the French horn part at the beginning of the movie.

He laughs and talks about what's happening, just enjoying the wonder of the story and the imagination he's experiencing and developing in his own right.

My son remembers watching it when he was young, too. So, they watch it together.. I love it when generations can share and relate their own experiences with each other.

Of course, I have my own copy, too. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I bought this dvd because I thought it would be like the tv version introduced by David Bowie.

That to me means a lot so if anyone can tell me which of the dvd or Blu-ray has just David Bowie and the film I would be grateful.

A beautiful story of a boy whose snowman comes to life at midnight, it has captured the imagination of generations and continues to enchant. After much effort put into building his frosty creation, at the stroke of midnight whilst the young boy is fast asleep, the snowman suddenly springs to life.

We then follow the snowman whilst accompanied by the young boy, as they impart on a magical wondering which leads them on a journey all the way to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus.

Dianne Jackson's and Jimmy T. It is testament to this respectful and sensitive adaptation that the embellishments made from the source material work so well.

The film then takes flight, quite literally, and abandons the confines of the original story to embark on an epic and joyous journey.

Both halves perfectly compliment the other and it never feels haphazardly stitched together. Considering the age of this film, the transfer is superb.

This transfer has been re-mastered and the results are evident for all to see. The animation for this movie is pretty simple, but even so the colours and detail are evidently of the highest quality.

The colour palette is bold and lifelike, blacks are solid and the image is in pristine condition. There is no sign of damage or dirt on the print and it is safe to say that the movie has never looked so good.

There is a small amount of grain but this is not distracting. Edge enhancements are nowhere to be seen and compression artefacts are also non-existent.

Overall, this is an amazing transfer which Universal should give up on trying to improve, as it simply cannot be done! Learn more about Blu-ray region specifications.

As it is, this seemed like a big waste of talent and time for all those involved, including the viewer.

The movie trailer is completely misleading, so don't expect to get what they're showing and suggesting in that brief teaser.

Makes me wonder if there was a ton of footage that simply ended up on the cutting-room floor in an attempt to make this film watchable. There are numerous characters and story points that seem very out of place to the plot, I suppose that could be the director's way of throwing out red herrings just to throw us off the trail of what's really going on.

I did initiialy feel sympathy for the actors, who seemed to be putting in their best effort: but by the finish, I was rooting for death for all of them.

The pacing was slow and oddly choppy. We are introduced to a number of characters that are completely one dimensional.

I think the worst part were the flashbacks. There was nothing telling you that they were flashbacks and they were just oddly placed in the narrative.

I enjoyed it, but would probably not have if I had not read the book. Because I had read the book, in fact all of the books about Hole except Thirst, which I am reading now , I could see what they were trying to do with the movie, and that made it more interesting for me.

I realize now that converting a Hole book to the screen is no small achievement. A lot of what is appealing about the Hole character is the psychological aspect.

And that certainly did not happen with Snowman with much success. Just because a movie is difficult to understand doesn't make it "clever" or "cerebral".

It just means the writer and director did a bad job telling the story. Please ignore all the 4 and 5 star reviews. Without exception they were written by people who loved the novel, or people who think movies that confuse them must be good.

This movie was so poorly done, which is a shame given the acting talent of Fassbender and the rest of the cast. The plot was unintelligible.

There were so many unanswered questions and dead-end plot lines that by the very predictable end of the movie, you will just be glad that it is over.

Don't waste your time. I love a good mystery, and this movie hit the spot. No, it is not typical, and it certainly shakes up the stereotypical, predictable plot line.

Learn more about Blu-ray region specifications. The soundtrack in question is a simple Stereo track which does everything it is asked for.

The dialogue levels are audible throughout and the enchanting soundtrack is also clearly reproduced. For some reason, Universal Pictures UK has decided not to include subtitles with this release.

The menus are animated and feature in the main soundtrack. It starts off by showing some footage of Raymond Biggs where he talks about how the idea of the film came about.

Raymond Biggs is heavily featured throughout and often gives his insight into various topics surrounding the movie. As expected, the animation is featured heavily, and there is also the obligatory interview clip with Aled Jones.

My favourite part of this documentary is the section where several mistakes in the story are pointed out. These are not obvious mistakes, but nevertheless they are funny to watch.

This is a quality documentary which leaves no stone unturned. What he did was to get two members of his staff to cut copies of the book into pieces and develop the story from that.

Fans of the animation film will be mesmerised by this extra, and it is a welcome addition to the disc. Next up is the Storyboards, of which there are three in total.

Each storyboard has to be viewed individually. Special Feature: Introductions from David Bowie and Raymond Briggs: The final extra on this disc is the Alternative Introduction, which was produced to help promote the film animation overseas and in particular in North America.

David Bowie and with crazy haircut and all! It was brought in to do the introduction which lasts for just over a minute and a half.

Even though this introduction differs only slightly, it would have been nice to have a choice of which one to watch with the main presentation.

The highlights of this disc are without doubt the transfer which is stunning, and the elaborate documentary. That is why as soon as I saw this for sale I had to have it in the ultimate Blu-ray format, as it shows off this magical animation film in its full glory and will ever be associated with Christmas and should be an annual event over the festive period, than watch it when it is broadcast on your television.

Highly Recommended! Andrew C. Okay, it's The Snowman, a classic. I had to get this version because it has the original intro and is not cropped from the original presentation, this being 1.

I enjoyed it, but would probably not have if I had not read the book. Because I had read the book, in fact all of the books about Hole except Thirst, which I am reading now , I could see what they were trying to do with the movie, and that made it more interesting for me.

Don't waste your time. I love a good mystery, and this movie hit the spot. No, it is not typical, and it certainly shakes up the stereotypical, predictable plot line.

How dare they? How dare they strive for originality, creativity and not-so-trite characters? Thankfully, they dared.

Grab some popcorn and settle in to watch this excellent movie! Sounded cool. It was a bunch of whiny crap about a drunk cop and dysfunctional families with a murder or two thrown in and a completely hokey ending.

Snow man betrayed a lot of people and killing them silently, one man figured it out and who he was, and the snowman tried to kill him, but he drowned when he stepped on thin ice and fell in, back to the memory of killing of an innocent man that went to the cross Jesus.

I am very glad that I read the book first because this film really would not have made much sense otherwise. Terrible job with the adaptation to screen, leaves out a lot of character development, and skips around a lot.

The best way I can describe it is to imagine that you are reading a book with every other chapter ripped out of it. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.

Uneven, disjointed, massive plot holes, and jumps about with no real logic. A shame because it has a great cast. Could have been so much better.
